RERK recently commissioned a Emergency power system designed to act as a Blackstart unit for a modern cogeneration plant. The MHKW generates electrical and thermal energy with highly efficient gas engines to supply households in Germany. To restore this critical infrastructure in the event of a grid failure, the generator provides 800 kW to restart it immediately.

The black start unit was custom-designed for the client. Key features include:

* Unit fitted in a container to optimize space, the emergency power system with a total weight of approx. 34-tons supplies three consumer strings and two grid switchovers.

* important functions such as auxiliary drives and the control room of the MHKW are maintained independently of the grid.

*Integrated resistors can be switched on and off depending on the load to ensure the regeneration temperature of the soot filter in island operation. This itself has a separation rate of approx. 95% of the particles produced in the exhaust gas.

* Vital connection to the control system is provided by a Siemens PLC.

*Another specially configured container houses approx. 16,000 l HVO100 (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) including environmental certificate from the leading manufacturer Neste

* The hydrogenated (hydrogen-treated) vegetable oil HVO100 consists of 100% renewable raw materials, including waste.

*  Up to 90% CO2 and up to 60% particulate matter can be saved with this climate diesel compared to fossil fuel, with the same high performance. In addition, NOx can also be reduced.

Frerk Aggregatebau GmbH has been producing power generation systems for a wide range of applications since 1964 –this represents over 50 years of experience and top performance for the power supply. Through its collaboration with SFC Energy AG, Frerk Aggregatebau GmbH is actively developing emergency power systems based on hydrogen fuel cells. These can be used to generate emergency power sustainably and without emissions.  In June 2024,  a fuel cell system -  type "EFOY H2-Genset 28/10" with a peak output of 28 kW - was  tested under load on the premises of Frerk Aggregatebau GmbH in the Schweringen industrial area.
