n 2024 Grupel supplied a 2,300 kVA diesel genset for Tulum Airport in Mexico, the largest on the Yucatan Peninsula after Cancun International Airport. This project currently consists of three generator sets, one of 528 kVA with a Grupel engine, operating in parallel with the grid, and two of 845kVA with a Baudouin engine, operating synchronously.
All three units are equipped with fuel transfer pumps for external tanks installed on site, and exhaust mufflers to attenuate noise.
The Felipe Carrillo Puerto de Tulum International Airport, inaugurated in December 2023, has an infrastructure capable of receiving aircraft, passengers, cargo and merchandise by Mexican and international air transport. It has capacity for 5.5 million passengers per year, a 3,500-meter-long runway, a 75,153-square-meter passenger terminal, 500 parking spaces and 13 departure lounges, as well as other commercial spaces, restaurants and waiting areas.
Guaranteeing the electricity supply through generator sets is ideal, since, in the event of a network failure, these devices assume the load of the installation, maintaining the normal functioning of the entire infrastructure. The use of parallel generator sets is quite common in occasions when it is necessary to increase the total power of the system, make it more reliable and also reduce the associated costs. Synchronization between generating sets consists of connecting two or more units (or one unit and the network) so that they can jointly supply energy and thus guarantee greater power, adaptability to load variations, greater reliability and even more efficient consumption.
