olls-Royce, Landmark Power, and ASCO have partnered to commission a 10-megawatt gas engine power plant located in Worksop, East Midlands, UK, featuring an integrated carbon capture system. The plant utilises six mtu Series 4000 L64FNER combined heat and power units supplied by Rolls-Royce, which extract CO2 from the exhaust gases. This CO2 is processed and liquefied on-site for industrial use, such as carbonating beverages including beer and lemonade.

   The facility is capable of capturing up to 30,000 tonnes of CO2 annually. The generated electricity feeds around 10,000 households, supporting grid stability, while the heat produced powers both carbon capture processes and provides local heating. Rolls-Royce will maintain plant operations under a ten-year contract. ASCO Carbon Dioxide Ltd will oversee the carbon capture and purification process, ensuring high-purity CO2 production, while Landmark Power Holdings Ltd will develop and operate the plant. The project is a joint venture with Victory Hill, an investment firm specialising in sustainable energy infrastructure.

This installation is the first project under Landmark’s FLEXPOWER PLUS™ concept, which integrates containerised power generation with carbon capture technology for flexible, modular clean energy solutions. Michael Stipa, Senior Vice President at Rolls-Royce Power Systems, highlighted the plant as an example of sustainable energy contributing to decentralised, low-emission power supply.

 Landmark Power Holdings' FLEXPOWER PLUS™ concept is a pioneering approach to clean, flexible, and sustainable energy production. It combines High Efficiency Flexible Power Generation modules with Carbon Capture Utilisation (CCU) modules, enabling higher efficiency and priority to the grid. The concept captures low carbon raw materials for use or further processing, contributing to the circular economy. The FLEXPOWER PLUS® concept is a scalable solution for clean, dependable, and efficient power generation, offering the capacity to provide baseload power, similar to wind power but with a low carbon profile.

The UK's first power plant built with this concept is located in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, and is a collaborative development by Rolls-Royce Power Systems, Landmark Power Holdings Ltd., ASCO Carbondioxide Ltd., and funded by Victory Hill Capital Partners. The plant captures up to 30,000 tons of CO₂ per year and supplies electricity to over 10,000 households, ensuring grid stability. The heat produced by the combined heat and power plants is utilized to support CO₂ recovery.

 This concept marks a significant milestone in sustainable power innovation, demonstrating the potential of combining advanced engine technology with carbon-conscious design. It is a blueprint for the future of energy generation, meeting the UK's need for flexible, low-carbon baseload power.

  The purified CO2 presents an additional revenue stream and valuable resource for sectors including food production, synthetic fuels, and sustainable aviation fuel. This combined approach aims to support the UK’s energy transition by pairing flexible power generation with carbon emissions reduction.
