NERGETUS S.A. holds the contract for the full EPC scope, delivering a complete turnkey backup power solution to the client at the Start Campus in Sines, Portugal and has installed gensets from Royce Power Systems MTU engines.
Start Campus is currently undergoing significant development with the construction of the SIN02 hyperscale data centre. This facility is designed for high-density AI and HPC workloads and is expected to operate on 100% renewable energy. The site is part of a larger project aimed at scaling AI and HPC workloads, with the first building, SIN01, operational since late 2024.
The campus is set to deliver 180MW to 240MW of IT capacity, supporting ultra-high densities up to 700kW per rack. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2027, with the first suite delivered to Nscale at the end of 2025. The facility is strategically located on Portugal's southwest coast, benefiting from direct access to international subsea connectivity and long-term expansion capacity.
The power systems are equipped with Rolls-Royce Power Systems MTU engines and have been containerised by partner company Etermar Energia in Setúbal. Etermar Energia specialises in renewable energy projects, particularly in the offshore wind sector. It operates a private loading dock and has a construction area of over 17 hectares, with plans to expand to 25 hectares by 2026 and 30 hectares by 2029.
The company focuses on producing sustainable, high-quality components for renewable energy projects, including concrete and steel structures.
Etermar Energia is committed to innovation and has partnerships with various developers and projects, including the ONDEP initiative for wave energy technology. The company is a founding member of the Portuguese Alliance for Energy Transition, promoting sustainable solutions in the energy sector.
Four gensets are already installed and the remaining ten generator sets will be delivered to the Start Campus in Sines over the next few months, marking another important milestone in what has become a key contribution to the largest data centre in Portugal.
