ix Wärtsilä 6L32 medium-speed engines and four Caterpillar 3516 high-speed engines are currently powering an isolated mining site undergoing major changes in Senegal. The mining client offered a simple but ambitious challenge to both genset manufacturers: to provide a reliable energy solution able to grow with the mine's pace.

After an initial phase ensured by a 7MW rental power plant, engineering teams designed, built, and commissioned a 22MW power plant in order to  guarantee the mine’s long-term energy performance.

Because of the efficiency and reliability of the six Wärtsilä 6L32 medium-speed engines and the four 3516 high-speed engines, the plant now delivers optimised production tailored to the client’s project.

The Wärtsilä 6L32 medium-speed diesel engines are known for their efficiency, ease of maintenance, and long, maintenance-free operating periods. They are designed to operate on heavy fuel with a maximum viscosity of 55 cSt at 100°C, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. The engines are compliant with the IMO Tier II exhaust emissions regulations and offer excellent fuel flexibility, allowing operation on HFO, LBF, MDO, and ultra-low sulphur fuel. They are also known for their low fuel oil consumption over a wide load range, making them a preferred choice for many offshore applications. The Wärtsilä 6L32 engines are available with 6 to 16 cylinders and a power output ranging between 3 and 9.3 MW at 720 and 750 RPM, providing a wide range of power and performance options for various challenging applications.

The 3516 high-speed engines offer massive displacement, high torque output, and exceptional durability. These engines are designed for continuous operation under extreme conditions, making them an essential component of many marine industries. The 3516 engine's high horsepower output, massive displacement, long service life, and fuel efficiency make it one of the most trusted engines in the industry.

The 3516 engine is also known for its high-load, long-hour operations, which is why it is engineered for high-load, long-hour operations. This makes it an essential component for many key industries. These features make them an ideal solution for operators requiring maximum reliability and performance.

Senegal's mining industry is rich in a variety of minerals, including gold, contributing significantly to the country's economy.  Senegal is one of the world's leading producers of high-quality phosphates, accounting for about 6% of global exports in 2006.  Titanium-bearing minerals have been found in the coastal regions, with reserves estimated at 10 million tons. Senegal has notable reserves of iron ore, with the Falémé project in the southeast being a significant player, while Zirconium is found in abundance, and is used in ceramics and refractories.

These minerals not only contribute to Senegal's GDP but also create numerous jobs and stimulate growth in other sectors, such as construction and services. The mining industry's growth is expected to continue, driven by new mineral discoveries and increasing international demand.
