n the heavy-duty sector, the new 12 cylinder in 90° V design V12 engine D2862 LE44x with 735 kW (1,000 HP) is at the top of the MAN engine portfolio. This is a diesel engine with direct injection and SAE 1 flywheel housing. It features a single-stage turbocharger with charge air cooling and wastegate.

The new engine is currently available in three versions: D2862 LE441 for IMO Tier 2 emission standard, D2862 LE444 for EPA Tier 3 Commercial and D2862 LE44A for EU Stage V. "By adjusting the turbocharger and the valve timing, it was possible to raise the mean pressure and increase the power by 73 kW (100 HP) compared to the original most powerful engines," explains a company spokesman.

The very efficient MAN D2862 LE44x engine is based on the latest engine platform. With its increased power and a dry weight of 2,270 kg, it offers excellent power density for heavy-duty applications, reports the company. With 24.24 litre displacement, 128 mm bore and 157 mm stroke, the powerful MAN marine engine achieves a maximum torque of 4,380 Nm at 1,100 to 1,600 rpm.

The MAN D2862 LE44x is particularly efficient when considering the total life cycle costs: In terms of specific consumption under full load at maximum torque, the 12-cylinder engine shines with a minimum consumption of 192.3 g/kWh.

An additional benefit are the extended intervals for oil change (600 hours) and basic overhaul (18,000 operating hours). Individually mounted cylinder heads also ensure easy servicing, which allows MAN’s solid engine to shine when it comes to cost-effectiveness calculations.

The identical engine base positions and the same installation dimensions as with the previous series ideally simplify remotorisation projects. Compactly scaled at 2,124 mm x 1,153 mm x 1,28 mm (length x width x height), the 735 kW MAN 12-cylinder engine has an outstanding power density. The new D2862 LE44x also joins the ranks of reliable MAN engines: Many years of experience with engines as well as in-house development, design and production at the International Engine Competence Centre in Nuremberg ensure the high quality of MAN marine engines.

According to the company the D2862 has passed numerous field tests as well as on-site measurements with flying colours.

"The fact that each MAN engine produced is subjected to a test run, provides customers with individual assurance that they will receive familiar MAN quality. The type approval of the D2868 and D2862 engines with various classification societies rounds off the overall picture of reliable and efficient MAN engines"

a spokesman concludes.
