arget Power Generators was contacted by an existing M&E contractor, Red Electric Designs Ltd, to help the company procure a large open-type generator which could achieve 400 kVA in prime power. The generator was an open type and needed a residential exhaust to help reduce noise levels. The customer also wanted to monitor the generator remotely, so Target Power Generators fitted an 8-relay extension for the client. A 630A automatic transfer switch was also manufactured to UK standards, ensuring quality.
The specification included the following: AV440 400 kVA open-type diesel generator, three-phase 415 V; 630A automatic transfer switch; Residential exhaust; 8-relay extension;
DSE7320 control module; ABB 4-pole circuit breaker
This emergency standby diesel generator was designed for industrial use and its role was to power the new build pub premises if the power went off.
A company spokesman commented: "Our client chose Target Power because we offer customizable diesel generator solutions. This was the second time they used us, having previously procured a super silent diesel generator for a residential application. The customer was also working within a budget and knew Target Power Generators could deliver a high-quality industrial diesel generator at the right price for them. They wanted Target Power to supply the generator and provide a FAT (factory acceptance test) and price commissioning for them as well."
The generator was being used for standby purposes, so it was of critical importance that Target Power sourced one of the most reliable engines for the project. It chose the Volvo Penta TAD1344GE engine. The generator had to start within 10 seconds and also reach 50% step load. The Volvo engine was able to achieve this.
The spokesman added: "We had to produce an 8-hour internal tank to support the Volvo diesel generator for continuous running for 8 hours at 100% load. The tank was fully bunded, and we used high-quality anti-vibration mounts to help reduce noise levels.
"We understand that different markets require different generator builds. In the EU, our sets come with a standby kit as standard, which includes automatic mains failure (AMF) and a water jacket heater. Therefore, this open-type generator for The Castle Pub was manufactured to UK and EU specifications, including a 4-pole breaker, earthed neutral link, bunded base, high-grade sound insulation, and more."
The generator needed to be loaded onto a flatbed truck because a crane was being used to offload the generator. Target Power manufactured the base with lifting eyes capable of lifting the whole generator set.
The client allowed eight weeks to produce the set. This timeframe provided Target Power with enough time to design and manufacture the open-type diesel generator to the client's specifications. Furthermore, because the client wanted an 8-relay extension, Target Power also designed the control box to accommodate it.
